Sophia’s New Zealand “Crusade” shows her activities in connection with the USA led NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999:
- Involvement in organizing protests during bombing (US Embassy, British High Commission, NZ Parliament etc.) in 1999
- Involvement in organizing protest on the anniversary of the bombing in 2000 (US Embassy, British High Commission…)
- Radio show, half an hour, once a week for 6 months in 1999 analyzing political issues with stress on USA led NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.
- Organizing series of photographic exhibitions in Wellington in 2000 under the name: “The Effects of Modern Warfare on Civilian Populations – What the Media Didn’t Show About The 1999 Bombing of Yugoslavia”.
USA led NATO was bombing Yugoslavia from 24 March till 10 June 1999.
The operation was called:
“Merciful Angel” or
“Operation Allied Force” or
“Operation Noble Anvil”
The result of NATO’s “humanitarian”, “heroic”, “merciful”, “noble” action is:
- Around 4,000 dead (approx.75% civilians, many of them children)
- Around 10,000 wounded
- Around 2,500 unexploded devices left in many areas of Serbia which is a threat for many years to come.
- Increased number of deaths since then due to depleted uranium used during bombing.
- Increased cases of cancer
All are innocent victims fallen on the soil of their own country from the foreign aggressor’s weapons.
NATO action was an illegal aggression:
- Committed without the United Nations Security Council’s approval.
- The action was a violation of
- the fundamental principles of international law.
- the UN Charter,
- the (OSCE) Helsinki Final Act 1975 (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) and
- the NATO Founding Act.
It was the first war on European soil since World War II, waged against an independent and sovereign state which neither attacked nor otherwise threatened either NATO or any of its individual member states.
