Sandakan
Sandakan, a city on the east coast of Sabah and former capital. The first stop on Borneo. At first glance, it irresistibly reminded me of Baghdad in the late seventies and early eighties; a lot of small shops, 'full as can be', the architecture... They call it 'Little Hong Kong.' Because of the intense heat and humidity, it also reminded me of Kuwait in the early eighties.

Sandakan, grad na istocnoj obali Sabaha i nekadasnja prestonica. Prva stanica na Borneu. U prvi mah, neodoljivo me je podsetio na Bagdad krajem sedamdesetih i pocetkom osamdesetih proslog veka; mnostvo malih radnjica, “punih k’o oko”, arhitektura... Zovu ga “Mali Hong Kong”. Zbog velike vrucine sa vlagom podsetio me je i na Kuwait pocetkom osamdesetih.
The town is mostly clean, there are no beggars, and it's not overly crowded. Our hotel, The Elopura, is by the sea in an area with lots of restaurants that mostly serve seafood. Unlike the shore, the sea is quite dirty, with lots of debris and empty plastic bottles. What stands out is the many monitor lizards, which usually live in freshwater, but here they are in the sea too. They look intimidating, but it seems they don’t come onto the shore (at least in the town).
Grad je uglavnom cist, nema prosjaka, nema preterane guzve. Nas hotel The Elopura je obali mora u delu sa mnostvom restorana koji nude uglavnom morsku hranu. Za razliku od obale, more je dosta prljavo sa mnostvom otpadaka i praznih plasticnih boca. Ono sto pada u oci je mnostvo gustera monitora koji obicno zive u slatkoj vodi ali, eto, ima ih i u moru. Deluju zastrasujuce ali izgleda ne izlaze na obalu (bar u gradu).

This canter is a place where young, abandoned orangutans learn to socialize and play with each other under the careful watch of their human caretakers. When they grow stronger, they are released into their natural habitat in the jungle.

Rainforest discovery centre
The walkway goes through the jungle at about 40 meters high. Wildlife is observed from a bird's-eye perspective since jungle life mostly happens at those heights, that is, in the canopy of tall trees.

Pasarela prolazi kroz dzunglu na otprilike 40m visine. Divlji svet se posmatra iz pticije perspektive obzirom da se zivot dzungle odvija uglavnom na tim visinama tj u krosnjama visokog rastinja.

Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary
I believe most people haven't heard of Proboscis monkeys. They are monkeys that ‘thrive’ only in Borneo. They have big noses, especially the males (in females, it's ‘puny’ compared to the males). Males have a harem of about 20-30 females and, they say, are ready for action 24/7. When we visited them, it was breakfast time, so food was the main focus. Meaning: Eat first, then... philosophize.
They live freely in the jungle. Food is left in certain spots so that some of them come by for some extra feeding.
Prihvatiliste probosis majmuna
Verujem da vecina nije cula za Proboscis majmune. To su majmuni koji “uspevaju” samo na Borneu. Imaju velike noseve, pogotovu muzjaci (kod zenki je “prcast” u odnosu na muzjaka). Muzjaci imaju harem od oko 20-30 zenki i, kazu, spremni su za akciju 24/7. Kada smo ih mi posetili, bilo je vreme dorucka pa je hrana bila u prvom planu. Znaci: Najedi se pa .... filozofiraj.
Zive slobodno u dzungli. Ostavlja se hrana na pojedinim mestima tako da poneki dodju na dotatnu ishranu.
