The Trip to India and Nepal: June-September 1974
Slides show my Trip to India & Nepal from June to September 1974.
The target was Bali but, due to limited finances, we reached India and Nepal only.
- It was a trip of adventure, architecture and history
- I was travelling with Zika “The Beard”, Mika “Dzisa” and Sasha. All of us were in the final year of our studies (Architecture, Belgrade University)
- We had almost unlimited time but pretty limited finances. (I began the trip with US$1,080 in my pocket)
- We had previous experience of traveling (hitch-hiking) throughout Europe but this was quite a new experience for all of us:
- It was a time:
- without internet
- without mobile phones
- without digital cameras
- and the worst of all, without enough valid information
- Political crisis and conflicts at that time:
- Turkey & Greece over Cyprus
- Iraq & Iran (since the time from Babylon & Persepolis) over the Southern part (Shatt-Al-Arab)
- Pakistan & India over Kashmir
- But, still, on the bright side:
- Iraq was still relatively OK
- Russians hadn’t “visited” Afghanistan en mass
- Americans hadn’t begun getting involved in The Middle East (by “helping” Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria etc)
- In Iran, Shah Reza Pahlavi was still in power
Put u Indiju I Nepal: jun-septembar 1974
Slajdovi prikazuju moj put u Indiju I Nepal 1974.
- Na put krecemo Zika Jevtovic (Zika “Brada”), Miroljub Zivkovic (Mika “Dzisa”), Aleksandar Janicijevic (Sale) I ja, svi apsolventi arhitekture u to vreme
- Politicke krize i ratni sukobi u to vreme:
- Turska I Grcka u sukobu oko Kipra
- Irak I Iran; u sukobu oko juznog dela Shat El-Arab I to jos od vremena Babilona I Persepolisa. Kroz vreme se menja samo intezitet sukoba.
- Pakistan I Indija u sukobu oko Kashmira
- Na srecu,
- ipak je bilo relativno OK;
About the photos
- The trip is shown on around 650 photos. About 90% are photos taken by me. The other 10% are Sasha’s (I thank him for agreeing to include his photos in my slide show), photos taken from the internet and the slides that we purchased on the spot (which are very bad in quality). I included photos that are not only mine in order to show the atmosphere of the places and the travel more realistically.
- Most of the photos are originally black & white. I used black & white ilford film that we bought “by meter” before the trip. Then, I made black & white photos and slides, Photos and slides were scanned and transferred to sepia. So, the end result is good taking in consideration so many conversions. I was always more interested in photography as a DOCUMENT rather than art.
- For color photographs, I used Kodak slides. The slides were sent to Germany to be developed and then to my family in Serbia. So, they were able to track my movement with approximately 5-6 weeks of delay.
- Where the photos are concerned, I noticed something else; we didn’t bother taking photos of ourselves but of what we saw. Can you imagine today going to The Taj Mahal and not to be on any photos taken there, as it happened to us? We spent three months on the trip together but we have only one photo where all four of us are in it. It was taken in New Delhi.
- I divided The Trip into 13 legs. Each leg is shown as a few minutes slide show with music in the background related to the country shown on the slides.
O fotografijama
Slikano u Nju Delhiju.
- Podelio sam put u 13 etapa radi lakseg pracenja.
